Top 5 Tips to Rev Up Your Metabolism

If you have been following me for a while, then you know that my passion is health, wellness and empowering people to live their best lives. One of the most important things that we can do for ourselves and our bodies is to keep our metabolisms functioning at a healthy rate. Today we are going to talk about my 5 favorite tips for naturally boosting our metabolisms! 💪

What actually is your metabolism? Metabolism is the amount of energy (or calories) that your body needs to function daily. The more calories you burn throughout your day, the faster your metabolism. When this delicate process gets out of rhythm, this can impact your health in a negative way (weight gain, lethargy, even disease). How do we keep that from happening? Let me share my favorites with you:

1️⃣ Exercise more - I know this one might not be what you wanted to hear, but it is in fact the best way to kick that metabolism into high gear! Interval training is a great way to get more bang for your buck. Give this a try: run for one minute, then walk for two. Repeat for a total of 20 to 30 minutes each day. Another important form of exercise in addition to cardio is weight training. Make sure you are utilizing a total body program. Did you know? The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn at rest! That is enough to get me moving!

2️⃣ Eat the right things - Another not so glamorous tip, but an essential one. Making sure you are eating a healthy, whole food balanced diet will keep your metabolism moving. One of the most important food groups to be sure you are focusing on is protein. Incorporating protein into every meal is imperative to your metabolism as protein helps the body build lean muscle tissue. Aim for a protein potion the size of your first at each meal. Bonus tip: do NOT skip breakfast! There is a reason it is said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And no, coffee does not count. 😉

3️⃣ Get a good night’s sleep - Restorative sleep is one of the most important things that we can do for both our mental and physical health. It is important that the body is rested and rejuvenated so we can make better decisions the following day. When we are tired we tend to make poorer decisions (i.e. ending up in that drive thru instead of reaching for the well balanced meal we planned for).

4️⃣ Drink more water - Seems simple enough, right? Well to be honest, most people struggle with what seems so simple! The goal is to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. So for example if you weigh 150 lbs, then you should be consuming at least 75 oz of water per day. Sometimes we think we are hungry, but we are actually thirsty. Try drinking a glass of water 30 minutes before eating to see if it helps consume less because you are more full. If there was every a time to ditch those empty calorie, sugar laden drinks, it is now!
